Immigrant nurses are an essential component of Canada's healthcare system, contributing significantly to patient care and the overall health system. However, many face unique challenges when applying for jobs in Canada. From navigating the complex credentialing process to adjusting to cultural differences in healthcare practices, immigrant nurses often encounter obstacles that delay or hinder their success in securing the right role.
At Onward, we understand these challenges and have designed an AI-powered interview preparation app to help immigrant nurses. From resume to interview, Onward makes job preparation more accessible, efficient, and tailored to the needs of international nurses.
Top 5 Features of Onward That Help Immigrant Nurses Succeed
1. Upload Resume and Job Listing + Receive Tailored Interview Questions
The first step in any job application is preparing your resume. Onward allows you to upload your resume and job listings, which the app uses to generate personalized interview questions based on the role you're applying for. This feature ensures that you are practicing the most relevant questions, directly aligned with the job requirements.
2. Practice with Text or Speech
Onward offers the flexibility to practice interview responses either by typing or speaking. Depending on your preference, you can type out answers to improve your written communication or speak aloud to enhance your verbal responses.
3. Get Instant Feedback
Receiving immediate, actionable feedback is one of the most valuable aspects of interview preparation. Onward’s AI evaluates your responses, offering real-time insights into how well your answers align with the job’s requirements. Whether it's feedback on clarity, relevance, or confidence, the app guides you on areas to improve.
4. Video Recording of Interviews
Onward allows users to record their interviews, offering them the ability to replay and analyze their responses. This feature lets nurses evaluate their non-verbal communication, such as body language, eye contact, and tone of voice, which are often just as important as the content of their answers.
5. Transcription of Interviews
Onward automatically transcribes interviews, providing a detailed record of everything said during the session. Users can revisit their responses, analyze their language use, and reflect on areas for improvement.
Navigating the Canadian Job Market: Challenges and Solutions
Navigating the Canadian job market as an immigrant nurse can be a daunting process, but Onward equips you with the tools and resources to confidently step into the professional world. With features designed to address language barriers, enhance interview skills, and offer personalized support, Onward ensures that you are fully prepared to meet the unique challenges of securing a nursing role in Canada.
Behind the Scenes: Developing an AI Interview App for Tomorrow’s Nurses
In the ever-evolving landscape of healthcare, technology plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of nursing. The Onward team is committed to supporting the next generation of nurses, particularly those navigating the challenges of entering the Canadian healthcare system as internationally educated nurses (IENs). One of our most exciting initiatives is the development of an AI-powered interview practice tool, designed to empower these dedicated professionals and help them overcome barriers to success.
Understanding the Need
Our journey began with a deep understanding of the unique needs of immigrant nurses. Our research revealed that while nursing is one of the top professions for immigrants in Canada (immigrants make up 25% of registered nurses, source), many IENs are overqualified for the roles they secure. This mismatch often stems from systemic barriers, such as challenges with credential recognition, language proficiency, and unfamiliarity with the Canadian job application process.
What we found was that many qualified candidates struggle to effectively showcase their skills and experiences during interviews, which leads to them being undervalued or overlooked for positions that match their qualifications. We recognized that effective interview preparation could make a significant difference in how these nurses present themselves and their qualifications, helping them bridge the gap between their skills and the job market.
Designing the Solution
Our aim was to build a platform that was not only user-friendly but also sensitive to the unique challenges faced by immigrant nurses. Our design process involved several key phases:
User Research:
We conducted surveys and interviews with IENs to gather valuable insights into their challenges and pain points. This feedback was instrumental in shaping the app’s features, ensuring they directly addressed the specific needs of our target audience.
Feature Development:
Based on these insights, we focused on essential features such as personalized interview questions, resume uploads, and real-time feedback. Additionally, we recognized that different learners have different needs—some may prefer to practice by typing responses, while others may benefit more from speaking aloud. Offering both text and speech response options became a key feature of the app, accommodating different learning styles and preferences.
AI Training:
The heart of the Onward app lies in its AI capabilities. We’re in the process of training the AI on a diverse dataset of nursing interview questions and best practices. This ensures that the AI can provide accurate, actionable feedback that is both constructive and personalized, giving users the tools they need to refine their interview performance.
Looking Ahead
As we receive insights from user testing, we’ll be refining the designs, microinteractions, and features to address any friction points and ensure that the app is developed in a way that is easy to navigate.
Stay tuned to our updates!
